Sridhar Menon is an Indian Guitarist and the young Marathi music director. He is the lead guitarist of the band ‘Gust’.
Early Life & Background
Sridhar was born on 29th April, 1997 in Kerala, however, he shifted to Mumbai when he was just two months old. His father Mohanan Menon was HR in PK hospitality services, while his mother Usha Menon is a housewife. He has an elder brother Murli Menon, who now works in Qatar.
After shifting to Mumbai, he was brought up in Dombivli. Sridhar completed his schooling from Model English School, Dombivli. And currently he is pursuing B.Com in Financial Marketing. His father played the major role to build his career as he was very supportive. When Sridhar joined ‘Gust’, his dad surprised him by gifting a new guitar. He was very close to his dad, but sadly his father passed away last year in an accident.
In school, he was a shy but an intelligent student. Sridhar was always lean towards music. In the beginning he wanted to be a drummer, however, his father suggested him to learn guitar. He took guitar classes from Swapnil Gaikwad but it was just for 6 months, as later he decided to learn it on his own. He then learn guitar through YouTube videos. After learning guitar, he performed in a school gathering & inter-school events. He had also performed in an Annual School Gathering with his band member Vibhav Kulkarni (It was before the Gust as they knew each other since school days).
First assignment/ First major break
Sridhar’s first song was ‘Yeh Jaha’ for his band Gust, however, he gained popularity after recording debut song for the movie “Surajya”.
Journey in the Industry
Sridhar have never planned to make his career in music world, however, his passion towards music got him in the Industry. Sridhar began his music career through the band ‘Gust’ which was formed by Rohit Raut.
After winning ‘SaReGaMaPa Mega Champ’, Rohit Raut decided to form his own band. He joined hands with the bass guitarist, Vibhav Kulkarni. As Sridhar was the good friend of Vibhav, he told Sridhar that Rohit wants to form his own band & he is in search of his lead guitarist. Sridhar gave a try & was selected at the first place itself, as previous Rohit had took auditions of several guitarists but none rather Sridhar impressed him. Soon after that, they got their drummer Mann Bipin and the band was formed. After the formation of band, they wanted a unique name for it. Though it was bit difficult, but all four digged their heads to find appealing name for their band. However, Sridhar was the one who suggested the name ‘Gust’ which means ‘Rush of Wind’. As the name was quite catchy, they named their band as ‘Gust’. While recording their first song which was ‘Yeh Jaha’, Sridhar was facing the tough time due to his father’s sudden death. However, he didn’t give up and recorded the song successfully. Later, the band performed at various local & state events. Gust got its big break though the movie “Shutter” starring Sachin Khedekar & Sonalee Kulkarni. In 2014, they also performed at ‘Chirayu Awards’ in presence of entire Marathi film industry. Gust has huge young fan following.
Meanwhile, Rohit & Sridhar shared a strong bond and along with Gust they started working on their own compositions. How Rohit & Sridhar got closed? During their first band nightout, they decided to have a jamming session. As Rohit & Sridhar were the only two who were awake till night, they composed a fresh song. That’s when they both got tuned with each other and decided to compose the music as duo Rohit-Sridhar. The duo has performed in various events, especially in Konkan areas.
Sridhar at a young age have played guitar for the movies like “Shutter”, “Surajya” & “What About Savarkar”. Music director Pankaj Padhgan gave him break in industry by offering him “Surajya”. He led music to the song ‘Naya Bahana’ in it. In 2014, Rohit-Sridhar launched their debut professional song titled ‘Vitthal’ sung by Mangesh Borgaonkar. For the first time, Abhanga (Devotional Poetry) was composed in a dubstep style. However while recording for ‘Vitthal’, Sridhar got bit nervous and couldn’t record it properly. In this phrase, Rohit guided him, which gave him inspiration and then he never looked back. Now, he practices Guitar for 2 hours a day without fail. After “Vitthal”, Rohit-Sridhar approached Kartik Nishandar with their fresh compositions. Kartik introduce Rohit to the producer of “Avatarachi Goshta” Nitin Dixit, who offered him to compose a scratch promotional song. That time, Sridhar was busy in his college academics, but when he got to know about this big project, he rushed and composed the song within 7 hours along with Rohit. Even the director was surprised with their work and the song ‘Dokyacha Zhala Bhaza’ was finalized.
Currently, Rohit-Sridhar are working on music director A.V.Prafulchandra’s upcoming venture, where Sridhar is credited as a lead Guitarist. Rohit-Sridhar are also planning to launch their own song till Mahashivratri.
