Brief Intro

Upendra Limaye is the well known Marathi actor who has also acted in various Bollywood and few South Indian movies. He has won National Film Award for the movie ‘Jogwa’.

 

Early Life & Background

Upendra was born on 8th March, 1974 in a middle class family in Pune. He was the student of New English High School, Pune. He used to act in social gatherings plays. Later, he completed college from Bharti Vidyapeeth and won the several awards in inter-college competitions.  After 12th, he joined Lalit Kala Kendra and there along with his friends Sanjay Pawar, Subodh Pande and Abhay Godse, founded a theatre platform called ‘Parichay’ in 1988.

 

First assignment/ First major break

Upendra’s first commercial role was in a Marathi play ‘Padgham’, however he became famous among various masses from his role as Inspector Bhonsale from the movie ‘Page 3’.

 

Journey in the industry

Upendra started his acting career with Marathi theaters. During 11th grade he performed in the professional drama ‘Padgham’ directed by Jabbar Patel. In 1988, he co-founded the theatre group with his college friends called ‘Parichay’ and performed various shows. While working with Parichay, he came across noted actor and directors like Nilu Phule, Jabbar Patel, Amol Palekar and few more. In 1998, ‘Parichay completed a decade and till that time, rest of its members got parted away due to various reasons like shifting aboard, getting married and so on.

In 1999, Upendra then came to Mumbai to fulfill his dream of becoming successful actor. He acted in the commercial play ‘Dr Aaap Bhi’. He denied few acting offers due to his ideology, but later he met Sachin Khedekar who was a television actor at that time and he make him understand that he should accept the different roles and like an professional actor, he should perform it. Only after that, he accepted various roles. Later, he got offer from Vinay Apte to play a lead in his drama ‘Superhit No.1’. Although the play flopped but he came into limelight in front of people from Marathi film industry. Soon he received offers from serials and movies.

In 2002, Vinay Apte introduced Upendra to the director Madhur Bhandarkar and then Madhur gave him small role in his movie ‘Chandni Bar’. Till then he was well known among Marathi audience through his serials and movies. In 2004, Upendra got his big break in Bollywood as Madhur roped him in one of his movie ‘Page 3’ in a role of Inspector Bhonsale. The film was critically acclaimed and Upendra’s role was highly praised. Later, he was seen in the Bollywood movies like ‘Shiva’, ‘Traffic Signal’, ‘Darling’, ‘Sarkar Raj’ and ‘Contract’.

Upendra debuted in a Marathi Film Industry with a movie ‘Mukta’ in 1994. Later he was seen in the movies like ‘Bangarwadi’, ‘Sarkarnama’, ‘Kairee’ and more. He also worked in the movie ‘Dhyasparva’ which was also released in Hindi as ‘Kal Ka Admi’. After doing Bollywood movies, he even got lead and important roles in Marathi movies. He has worked with the noted director Rajiv Patil in the films like ‘Savarakhed Ek Gaav’, which was commercially successful and later did a movie ‘Blind Game’. Rajiv Patil was so impressed by him, that he offered Upendra to play a lead in the movie ‘Jogwa’. Upendra accepted the offer and won the National Film Award as Best Actor for the movie. It was for the first time, that a Marathi film and a Marathi actor were honored with this Award. He also played a role of Shrihari Sapkal in the movie ‘Mee Sindhutai Sapkal’. He has also worked in the movies like ‘Jatra’, ‘Urus’, ‘Dhoosar’, ‘Mahaguru’ and ‘Kokanastha’.

Upendra had worked in various Marathi serials like ‘Samantaar’, ‘Jagavegali’, ‘Kimayagaar’, ‘Damini’, ‘Ya Gojirvanya Gharat’ and ‘Ya Sukhanno Ya’. But his popular role was considered as Ajay from ETV Marathi’s serial ‘Bhagyavidhata’. He has also worked in National TV’s serial ‘Nakab’ and in a Tamil movie ‘Shivapathikaram’ in 2006.

Upendra’s upcoming movie ‘Gunaaji’ is in a Konkani and Hindi language. It will be his first Konkani movie.

 

Personal life

Upendra is married to Dr. Swati Limaye. The couple has a daughter name Bhairavi and son name Ved.
