Amruta Subhash is a popular Marathi actress, who has also worked in few Hindi movies. She is also a singer who had released her private album. She is popularly known for her role in a Oscar nominated movie ‘Shwaas’ and for the serial ‘Avaghachi Sansar’.
Early Life & Background
Amruta Subhash was born on 13th May. She is the daughter of actress Jyoti Subhash. She has completed her acting course from National School of Drama (NSD), Delhi. She has also learned classical singing and Bharat Natyam.
First Assignment/ First Major Break
Amruta started her career as a theatre artist; however she became popular for her role as Asawari from the serial ‘Avaghachi Sansaar’.
Journey in the Industry
Amurta started her acting career while studying in NSD Delhi. She has acted in the plays like ‘Urvashiam’, ‘Bela Meri Jaan’, ‘Mrug Trushna’ and more for NSD. After returning to Maharashtra, Amruta got her big break by replacing Bhakti Barve in a lead role for popular Marathi play ‘Tee Fulrani’. She also acted in the plays like ‘Kshitijaparyant Samudra’, ‘Pahile Vahile’ and ‘Shree Tashi Sau’. She also acted in Indo-German Marathi play ‘Miva’. She played the role of Salma in the play ‘Satheche Kaay Karayacha’ directed by her husband Sandesh Kulkarni. Later, she played the negative role opposite Aniket Vishwasrao in the play ‘Love Birds’ in 2008.
In 2004, Amruta debuted in movies with the blockbuster Marathi movie ‘Shwaas’. She portrayed the role of medical social worker Aasawari in the movie. The movie starrer Arun Nalawade and Sandeep Kulkarni, was India’s official entry to Oscar 2004. The movie has also won Best Feature Film at National Film Awards and it ranked 6th in Academy Awards.
After Shwaas, Amruta got break in Hindi movie ‘Chausar’. In the same year she acted in the Marathi movie ‘Devrai’ and Hindi television movie ‘Nirmala’, which was directed by noted poet Gulzar. In 2006, she played a 15 year old widow in the movie ‘White Rainbow’, which was followed by Marathi movies like ‘Nital’, ‘Bagh Haat Dakhaun’, ‘Teen Bahene’, ‘Ajuni Yeto Vaas Fhulana’ and ‘Chhotyashya Suteet’. Her mother Jyoti Subhash has portrayed the role of Amruta’s grandmother in the movie ‘Aaji’.
In 2008, Amruta played the role of Jyoti in the Hindi movie ‘Firaaq’ with Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, Deepti Naval and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. She also played the role of Upendra Limaye (Goonga’s wife) in Ram Gopal Varma’s movie ‘Contract’. In the same year, she acted in the Marathi movie ‘Valu’ in a role of Sangi. The movie was the first Marathi movie that was selected in Rotterdam International Film Festival 2008.
In 2009, Amruta played the role of Prabha in the super-hit movie ‘Vihir’, which was featured at Berlin and Rotterdam International film festival. She acted in the movie ‘Gandha’ with her mother Jyoti Subhash and sister-in-law Sonali Kulkarni. She also acted in the movies like ‘Masala’, ‘Tya Ratri Paus Hota’, ‘Kavadase’ and ‘Savalee’. In 2013, she portrayed the role of elder Dolly in the blockbuster Marathi movie ‘Balak-Palak’. The initial of the movie was ‘BP’ and it was co-produced by Ritesh Deshmukh. Her upcoming Hindi movie is ‘Spaghetti 24×7’ and she will be seen in a lead role opposite Mimoh Chakraborty.
Apart from roles in movies, Amruta is also a popular television actress. She played lead role in the serial ‘Zoka’ for ETV Marathi. Later she was seen in the serial ‘Paaulkhuna’. Her most successful role on television was as Aasawari on Zee Marathi’s most popular serial ‘Awaghachi Sansaar’. She won Zee Gaurav Award for Best Actress for the role of Asawari in 2004. In 2012, she participated in Marathi celebrity singing reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ and was among top 5 contestants who reached till finale. However, Prashant Damle won the competition. She has also acted in the Marathi serials like ‘Sree’, ‘Bhavar’, ‘Zoka’ and ‘Katha’. She has also featured in several commercials like Vim Bar, Nihar Oil, Rasoi, Britannia Mari Gold and Airtel.
As Amruta was a student of classical singing, she had sung in several Marathi movies like ‘Haapus’ and ‘Ajintha’. She had also provided background score for films ‘Nital’ and ‘Teen Bahene’. She had also launched her music album in ‘Jata Jata Pawasane’. She had also participated in singing reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’.
Amruta is married to director Sandesh Kulkarni. Bollywood actress Sonali Kulkarni is her sister-in-law.
