Deepti Shrikant is a popular television actress, who has earned her name in Hindi and Marathi serials. She is known for playing the role of Meera in Zee Marathi’s show ‘Mala Sasu Havi’ and playing the role of Radha in Hindi serial ‘Parivaar- Kartavya Ki Pariksha’.
Early Life & Background
Deepti Shrikant was born as Deepti Devi on 21st February in a Gujarati family in Pune. Her father Shrikant Devi used to work in Adhinath Co.op Bank and her mother Shobha Devi works as a manager in Bank of Maharashtra. Her elder brother Umesh Devi is a CA and a football player who works for the Swiss Bank. Though she belongs to a Gujarati family, her mother is a Maharashtrian, and as she used to stay in Pune, she was fluent in Marathi language since her childhood.
Deepti has got scholarship during her schooling. Till the fourth grade, she studied in Hindustan Antibiotics School in Pimpari, Pune. Later, she completed her schooling from Dnyan Prabodhini School in Pune. She completed her junior college from NuMaVi (Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya). She did her graduation in B.Com from MMCC College, and later, did her M.Com from Pune University. She has also done a course of software design in 2d-3d animation and of webpage designing.
Deepti was born as Deepti Devi, however, when she was working in the Marathi Film Industry, people used to ask her about her surname and caste. So to adapt herself in the Marathi industry she dropped her surname ‘Devi’ and used her father’s name ‘Shrikant’ as her last name.
First Assignment/ First Major Break
Deepti first got a break in a movie ‘Pak Pak Pakak’, however, she became popular after her Hindi show ‘Parivaar’.
Journey in the Industry
Deepti was interested in acting since her childhood and use to attain the drama classes (Natya Shibir) during her summer vacations. Her teacher noticed her acting talent and told her parents to encourage her in the acting field. Her mom encouraged her as Deepti belonged to an orthodox family. She participated in various drama competitions during her college life. She was part of the Maharashtra Cultural Centre Grips and worked in many Grips plays. In Grips, she worked with noted actors like Mohan Agashe, Vibhawari Deshpande and Shreerang Godbole, from whom she learned a lot.
While doing plays for Grips, Deepti got a small role of Kaveri in the Marathi movie ‘Pak Pak Pakak’. She worked with Nana Patekar in that movie and this was her first break in the industry. Before that, she was seen in T-series music albums and print ads like Colgate. Later, she came to Mumbai and was offered ‘Hi Vaat Dur Jate’. Unfortunately, the serial didn’t go on air because of some problems, but Deepti did not lose her hope.
Deepti soon got an offer from ETV’s show ‘Pankhanchi Savali’, which was her first TV appearance. During the shooting of this show, she got an offer for ‘Char Divas Sasusche’ from the same channel. Then, for the same production house, she acted in the show ‘Sataa Janmachya Gathi’, along with Madhura Velenkar. However, she came into limelight after playing the role in Zee Marathi’s popular show ‘Avaghachi Sansar’.
During the shooting of ‘Avaghachi Sansar’, Deepti’s co-actors Suhita Thatte and Vandaka Vaknis told her to try out her luck in Hindi shows, as she had a good command over Hindi language. Later, she gave auditions for Hindi shows and got selected for a lead role in Zee TV’s show ‘Parivaar- Kartavya Ki Pariksha’. This serial lasted for almost two and a half years and Deepti became popular among Non-Marathi audience.
After ‘Parivaar’, Deepti became an established actress in the industry. Soon she got a chance to play the second lead on Colors show ‘Bhagyavidhataa’, in its second season. She also did a comedy show ‘Don’t Worry Chachu’ for Sab TV. She has also done an episodic role for Sony TV’s ‘Crime Patrol’. Deepti then portrayed the role of Saumya in Balaji Telefilms’s popular show ‘Bade Aache Lagte Hai’, which airs on Sony TV. Later, she quit the show to give priority to ‘Mala Sasu Havi’. She was replaced by Amrin Chakkiwala. Meanwhile, she acted in Star Pravah’s show ‘Antarpat’, and made a comeback in the Marathi industry after almost three years. While she was doing ‘Bade Acche Lagte Hai’, Zee Marathi offered her ‘Mala Sasu Havi’, and she happily accepted the show. Her role as Meera, who was in a search of mother-in-law became quite popular among masses.
Deepti has performed in various television Award functions. In Hindi television, she has performed in ‘Colors Golden Petal Awards’ and ‘Zee Rishtey Awards’. She has also performed in ‘Zee Marathi Awards’ and ‘Uncha Majha Zhoka Awards’. Till date Deepti hasn’t done any commercial play. After ‘Pak Pak Pakak’, she has acted in Marathi movie ‘Samar Ek Sangharsh’ along with Umesh Kamat and Arun Nalawade.
Deepti loves to do social work and feels that if not an actor she would have been a social worker. She visits orphanages and spends time talking to people over there. She also provides financial aid for the children’s education.
Deepti got engaged with Amogh Desai, the architect-interior designer on 11th August 2013 and soon the couple will tie the knot.
