Gopinath Munde is the Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha of India from the ‘Bharatiya Janata Party’ (BJP).
Early Life & Background
Munde is born on 12th December 1949 in Beed, Maharashtra in a middle class family. He was born in a Vanjari cast to Pandurang Munde, who was a farmer and Limbabai Munde. He has an elder brother Pandit Anna, elder sister Saraswati Karad and younger brothers Manikrao Munde and Venkatrao Munde. After the death of his father, his elder brother took care of his family.
In the early days, as there were no schools in the village, Munde used to attend his school under the tree shade. Later, a three-room college was built in the village. He then completed his secondary education from Zilla Parishad School, and then, completed graduation from Ambejogai, Maharashtra. During college, he was involved in the student’s movement.
Journey in Politics
Munde was the friend of the politician Pramod Mahajan since his college days. Mahajan forced Munde to join the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, and soon, he got involved in the politics. In 1971, Munde became the part of Bharatiya Jana Sangh campaign during the Lok Sabha elections in the Beed constituency. Later, he became the head of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and looked after the half dozen of RSS Shakhas (Branches) of Pune. He also became the member of the executive committee of RSS.
He then took part in the agitation against the state of emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He along with Pramod Mahajan led the movement in Aurangabad and Marathwada, due to which he was imprisoned in the Nasik Central Jail and was released when the emergency was lifted. In the jail, he met many political leaders who were imprisoned and soon he became the secretary of the Struggle Committee set up in the jail under the leadership of Dhariaji.
Later, Munde took part in a movement launched by newly formed Janata Party. He soon became the Joint Secretary of the Janata Party. In 1978, he first contested the Zilla Parishad elections from Beed district and won it. In 1980, he won Renapur State Assembly seat.
Meanwhile, Janata Party got split and Bharatiya Janata Party was formed by the former leaders of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. When BJP was formed, Munde was appointed as a President of the BJP’s youth wing ‘Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha’ in Maharashtra. In 1982, he became the secretary of BJP in Maharashtra and then, was promoted as the General Secretary of the state unit. In 1990, he was once again elected for the State Assembly. In December 1991, he was the leader of opposition of Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha. In March 1995, he became the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra and also the Minister of Home Affairs.
In 2009, Munde won the Lok Sabh elections. He became the member of the 15th Lok Sabha and is also the current member of the Beed Lok Sabha constituency. He was the Member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for Five terms.
Munde is married to Pradnya Mahajan, whom he met during his college years. She is the sister of late Pramod Mahajan and aunt of Rahul Mahajan. He has three daughters Pankaja, Pritam and Yashashri Munde.
