Manohar Joshi is an Indian politician and the prominent leader of the political party Shiv Sena. He was the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the Lok Sabha Speaker.
Early Life & Background
Manohar Joshi was born on 2nd December 1937 in the Raigad district. He was brought up in the lower-middle class family. He wanted to be an educated person and so with the help of his relatives he completed his education.
Manohar Joshi began his career by joining hands with Bala Saheb Thackeray’s political party Shiv Sena. He stood up for the elections of Legislative Council and got elected by majority of votes. In 1976, he became the Mayor of Mumbai. While in 1990, he got elected to the Legislative Assembly. He had also joined Brinhan Mumbai Corporation (BMC) as an officer.
Later, Shiv Sena made an alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and soon the alliance came into power.
After coming into power, Manohar Joshi became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He was the first Chief Minister who conducted the oath ceremony at Shivaji Park in the presence of millions of people. He was also the first Non-Congress Chief Minister of Maharashtra. In 1999, Manohar Joshi won the general elections from the central Mumbai and was soon promoted to the Lok Sabha. In 2002, he became the speaker of the Lok Sabha and continued till 2004. In March 2006, he was elected for a six-year term to the Rajya Sabha. In 2010, he was awarded a Doctorate degree in Political Science by Mumbai University.
Joshi got married to Anagha on 14th May 1964. The couple has a son name Unmesh and two daughters.
Manohar Joshi started Kohinoor technical/vocational training institute. He then started multiple branches of the institute in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Nashik. He also started his construction company named Kohinoor. He is also the owner of Kohinoor Business School and Kohinoor-IMI Institutes in Khandala, Maharashtra.
