Ramdas Athawale is the president of the Republican Party of India.
Early Life & Background
Athawale was born on 25th December 1959, in Agalgaon, in the Sangli district of Maharashtra. He belongs to the Buddhist religion. He is the son of Bandu Athawale and Honsabai Athawale. He was a student of Siddharth College.
Journey in Politics
Ramdas formed his own political party named ‘Republican Party of India’. He has worked for the upliftment of the handicapped and the Dalit community. He represented the Pandharpur constituency of Maharashtra. He was the member of 12th Lok Sabha of Maharashtra, where he represented Mumbai North Central in 1998-99.
In 1990, he became the Member of Maharashtra Legislative Council. In the same year, he was the Cabinet Minister. In 1998, he was elected at the 12th Lok Sabha, and then, was re-elected at the 13th Lok Sabha. He also became the member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He was also the member of Committee on Transport and Tourism, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Industry, Committee on Industry and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Meanwhile, he made an alliance with National Congress Party & Congress. In 2011, he broke his alliance with NCP-Congress after losing 2009 Lok Sabha’s election. Later in 2011, he made an alliance with Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party. Later that year, he contested elections of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation with Shivsena-BJP.
Even after breaking the alliance with NCP-Congress, he was in touch with NCP’s president Sharad Pawar. He has a unique speaking style and his speeches are popular among his people. He has a style of using Shayaris in his speech. He has now made his alliance with Shivsena-BJP.
He has shown his interest in Social and Cultural Activities by being the President of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Foundation and Buddhist Kalawant Academy. He was also the founder and president of Budh Dhamma Parishad. He was also the president of Republican Employees Federation and Municipal Majdur Sangh.
Ramdas always had an interest with the film industry. He writes his own Shayaris. He has also made cameos in few Marathi films like ‘Joshi Ki Kamble’ and ‘Annyayacha Partikar’.
Ramdas is married to Seema Athawale and the couple has a child named Jit. He stays in Bandra with his family.
He is the editor of the Weekly Magazine ‘Bhumika’. He is also the founder member of Parivartan Sahitya Mahamandal.
