Brief Intro
Ajay-Atul is the Indian duo of music director-composer. Ajay and Atul Gogavale are both real brothers. In 2008, Ajay-Atul won the Best Music Direction award at the 56th National Film Awards for the Marathi film ‘Jogwa’.
Early Life & Background
Atul was born on 11th September 1974 and Ajay his younger brother was born on 21st August 1976 in Pune. Atul and Ajay Gogavale are the blood brothers born to Ashok Gogavale who were a Revenue Department officer in Alandi in Pune. Due to their father’s transferable job, both were brought up in several villages in western Maharashtra, including Rajgurunagar, Junnar and Shirur.
Since their childhood, both Ajay-Atul were interested in music rather than school academics. In an NCC competition, Ajay won the prize for playing an existing song in a totally differently way. This instance inspired them to explore their music potential.
Their family didn’t support them because of financial position and so they started their musical ventures through their school, temples, local bands, etc and they learnt a lot from these ventures. They took their friends helped who owned instruments like harmoniums, mridang, dhol and use to practice on it. Later during the college year, when they started working with local bands as arrangers, their father brought them a keyboard for their practice.
Journey in the industry
Ajay-Atul came to Mumbai and started working on an international non-film music album named ‘Vishwavinayaka’ which gave them a major break to enter the Marathi music industry. They worked on many commercial jingles, ballets and advertisements to strengthen their profile. In 2000, they gave background music for the Marathi movie ‘No Problem’. In 2004, they gave the music to many popular Marathi songs like ‘Mann Udhana Varyache’ & ‘Malharavari’ from the movie ‘Aga Bai Arrechya’. They also won Sanskruti Kala Darpan Award for the movie. In 2005, they composed for the famous Marathi hit ‘Kombdi Palali’ from the movie ‘Jatra’. In the same year, they worked on the soundtracks of the popular Marathi film ‘Savarkhed Ek Gaon’ for which they bagged Maharashtra Kala Niketan Award and Maharashtra Times Sanman.
In 2010, Ajay-Atul composed the songs and background score for the Marathi film ‘Naṭarang’ and bagged several awards for it. The duo has also composed the title song of the movie ‘Checkmate’ and one of the tracks from the movie ‘Sade Made Teen’. They won three Awards for various Award events for the movie ‘Tujhya Majhya Sansarala Ani Kaay Have’. The Duo also won V. Shantaram Awards as a Best Music Directors, while Ajay won Best Playback Singer for the Marathi movie ‘Uladhaal’. In 2013, they composed soundtrack of two Marathi movies ‘Tapaal’ and ‘Dhating Dhingana’. They have also composed the sound tracks of the Marathi movies like ‘Goad Gupit’, ‘Zabardast’, ‘Bandh Premache’, ‘Bedhund’, ‘Jogwa’, ‘Ringa Ringa’ and more.
After capturing Marathi music industry Ajay-Atul turned their attention towards Bollywood. They debuted in Bollywood by composing the soundtrack for the film ‘Gayab’ in 2004. Later they worked for many Bollywood movies like ‘Viruddh’, ‘Waah Life Ho Toh Aisi’, ‘Struggler’, ‘Padmashree Laloo Prasad Yadav’ and ‘My Friend Pinto’. However, the duo became popular in Bollywood after composing soundtrack for the movie ‘Sigham’. Later both gave the music to Karan Johar’s movie ‘Agneepath’ and their song ‘Chikni Chameli’ became the superhit on the music chart. They won several Bollywood Awards for the movie. In the same year, they composed soundtracks for the movie ‘Bol Bachchan’, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Ajay Devgn. They will also provide background score and soundtrack for their upcoming movie ‘Singham 2’.
Ajay-Atul has also composed for various music album including Marathi, Hindi and Sanskrit. They started with a Sanskrit album ‘Vishwavinayak’ in 2001 as composers. They have also composed for Hindi albums like ‘Sang Sang Ho Tum’ and ‘Meera Kahen’. The duo has also has composed 7 tracks from the album ‘Bedhund’. In 2006, they composed for the Sanskrit album ‘Vishwatma’.
Ajay-Atul has also provided music to lots of Marathi soaps, especially for the Zee Marathi’s shows. They have given music to the shows like ‘Wadalvaat’, ‘Shriyut Gangadhar Tipre’, ‘Hasyasamraat’, ‘Hafta Band’, ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’, ‘Eka Peksha Ek’ and more. They have also provided background score for the ETV Marathi’s serial ‘Bedhund Manachya Lahari’ and ‘Kya Baat Hai’. The duo won the Zee Gaurav Award for the title track of ‘Zee Gaurav Geet’ and also won for Maharashtra Times Sanman for the title song of Star Pravah’s ‘Raja Shivchatrapati’. They also judged the season 10 of the Marathi ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ and won the Zee Marathi Best Judges Award.
Ajay-Atul has also provided music for lots of Marathi plays and has also won several awards for it. They won ‘Alpha Gaurav Award’ for the play ‘Sahi Re Sahi’ in 2003. They also won Maharashtra Rajya Vyavsayik Natya Spardha Award for ‘Lochya Zala Re’. Later they again won the same award in 2007 for the play ‘Kala Ya Laglya Jiya’. The Duo has also composed soundtrack for a Telugu film named ‘Shock’ in the 2006.
