Anuradha Paudwal is a popular playback singer in Bollywood. Along with Hindi, she has also sung songs in MarathiTamilTeluguOriya, and Nepali.

Early Life & Background
Anuradha was born on 27th October 1954 in Mumbai. She is an alumina of Xavier’s College, Mumbai.

First Assignment / First Major Break
Anuradha started her singing career in 1973 with the movie ‘Abhimaan’, however, she gained recognition after her collaboration with Laxmikant-Pyarelal for the popular songs from the movies like ‘Hero’, ‘Meri Jung’, ‘Batwara’ and ‘Nagina’.

Journey in the Industry
Anuradha was one of the rare singers to have bloomed during the reign of the Mangeshkar sisters in the Hindi music industry. She made her singing debut in the 1973 movie ‘Abhimaan’ starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. She had sung a shloka which is a Sanskrit verse.

After Abhimann, she made her Marathi singing debut with the movie ‘Yashoda’ in which Datta Davjekar was the music composer. In 1974, she brought out a record of non-film Marathi songs ‘Bhav Geeten’ which became very popular. Anuradha has been a playback singer for many Marathi movies and some of her memorable Marathi songs are ‘Disate Majalaa’, ‘Raja Lalakaari’, ‘Kaalyaa Maatita Maatitaa’ and many more. Anuradha’s husband Arun Paudwal along with his music partner Anil Mohile had composed music in most of these movies.

In 1976, she got her break as a playback singer in Hindi films with the movie ‘Kalicharan’. Her first solo song was in the movie ‘Aap Beati’ starring Hema Malini and Shashi Kapoor. She has worked with  various composers such as Rajesh Roshan for ‘Des Pardes’, Jaidev for ‘Dooriyan’ and ‘Laila Majnu’, Kalyanji Anandji for ‘Kalaakar’ and ‘Vidhaata’, and Usha Khanna for ‘Souten’ and ‘Sajan Bina Suhagan’.

Anuradha gained recognition after her collaboration with the music composers Laxmikant-Pyarelal for the popular numbers from the movie ‘Hero’. She then sang songs like ‘O mere Kwabon Ke’ from the movie ‘Meri Jung’, ‘Thaare Vaaste Re Dola, Tu Maaro Kaun Lage’ from the movie ‘Batwara’, ‘Tu Ne Bechain Itna Ziada Kiya’ and ‘Bhooli Bisri Ek Kahani’ from the movie ‘Nagina’ and ‘My Name is Lakhan’, ‘Tere Naam Liya’ and ‘Bekhabar Bewafa’ from the movie ‘Ram Lakhan’. Music of all these movies was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. However, the songs ‘Kehdo Ki Tum’ and ‘Hum Tumko Dilbar Kyon Maane’ from the movie ‘Tezaab’ were the last songs of Anuradha with Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Later she collaborated with the movie producer Gulshan Kumar and gave a success streak with the movies like ‘Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka’, ‘Aashiqui’ and ‘Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin’. Anuradha and Gulshan Kumar introduced many unrecognized playback singers of that time such as Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, Sonu Nigam and Anuradha’s husband Arun Paudwal into the music world, and she sang duets with them. She also sang songs with the popular singers of that time like Kishore KumarMohammed Rafi , Lata Mangeshkar, Asha BhosleAlka YagnikKavita Krishnamurthy and Sadhana Sargam. Anuradha had also sung with the duo Shiv-Hari for the movie ‘Sahebaan’.

At the peak of her career Anuradha announced that henceforth she would sing exclusively for T-Series and concentrated on devotional songs and “cover-version” albums. T-Series used her fame to good effect in numerous Bhajan and promotional videos. She was the first playback singer whose face featured on the music album covers more than the films’ actors. She sang for T-series for some time and then went into a sabbatical. After about five years, she restarted her playback singing career. She sang a few hit songs for her old music directors but the reception for her comeback was mild.

She has also collaborated with Pandit Jasraj on his ‘Geet Govind’ and on many devotional albums with Anup Jalota.

In Anuradha’s initial days, she had sung for the famous music composer R.D. Burman. When she collaborated with Gulshan Kumar, she actually convinced Mr.Burman to make songs for Gulshan Kumar’s label ‘T-Series’ and then Mr. Burman’s song ‘Aja Meri Jaan’ from the movie ‘Saagar’ become of the most popular song of that time. She also sang beautiful duets with her co-singers from the south, viz., S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and K. J. Yesudas.

However, Anuradha had never received any formal training in classical music. She had learnt singing just by listening to Lata Mangeshkar’s songs and by practicing for hours.

Personal Life
Anuradha was married to the music director Arun Paudwal, who died on 1st November 1991.
