Brief Intro

Madhuri Dixit is one of the renowned actresses of Bollywood. She is also known for her expert dancing skills. Madhuri is famous for her roles in the movies like ‘Tezaab’, ‘Dil’, ‘Hum Aapke Hai Koun’, ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’, ‘Devdas’ and many more. She has won 6 Filmfare Awards and had also awarded Padma Shri Award in 2008.

 

Early Life & Background

Madhuri was born on 15th May 1967 in Mumbai to Shankar Dixit and Snehlata Dixit. She completed her schooling from Divine Child High School and later she studied in Sathaye College, Mumbai. She completed her graduation in microbiology from Mumbai University. She has also taken training in Kathak at her young age.

 

First assignment/ First major break

Madhuri debuted in Bollywood with Rajshri Production’s movie ‘Abodh’ in 1984, but she came into limelight after a smashing hit ‘Tezaab’ opposite Anil Kapoor.

 

Journey in industry

Movies:

Madhuri made her debut in Bollywood with Rajshri Production’s movie ‘Abodh’ in 1984. However, movie failed on box-office but Madhuri’s work was critically acclaimed. In 1985, she acted in the movie ‘Awara Baap’ along with Rajesh Khanna, but even it failed on box-office. In 1986-87, she gave flop movies like ‘Manav Hatya’, ‘Mohre’, ‘Hifazat’ and more.

In late 1988, Madhuri portrayed the role of Mohini in the blockbuster movie ‘Tezaab’ opposite Anil Kapoor. Madhuri’s acting was highly praised along with her dancing skills in the movie, especially the famous song ‘Ek Doon Teen’. She also received her first Filmfare Best Actress nomination for the movie.

In 1989, Madhuri featured once again opposite Anil Kapoor in a role of Radha Shastri in the movie ‘Ram Lakhan’. The movie was directed by Subhash Ghai and it was commercially successful. She got her second Filmfare nomination for the movie ‘Prem Pratigyaa’ opposite Mithun Chakraborty. In the same year, she played the role of Divya Mathur in the multi-starrer movie ‘Tridev’ along with Naseeruddin Shah, Jackie Shroff and Sunny Deol. She again appeared in multi-starrer movie ‘Parinda’ in a role of Paro opposite Anil Kapoor. The movie also featured Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff and Anupam Kher. In 1989, she also made a special appearance in a song for Gujarati movie ‘Satyavadi Raja Harishchandra’.

In 1990, Madhuri played the role of rich brat Madhu Mehra opposite Aamir Khan in the movie ‘Dil’ for which she won her first Filmfare Best Actress Award. In 1991, she starred opposite Salman Khan & Sanjay Dutt in the highest grossing movie of that year ‘Saajan’. And Madhuri become top most actress of Bollywood. In the next year, Madhuri gave another blockbuster movie with Anil Kapoor titled ‘Beta’. Apart from Madhuri & Anil’s chemistry, the highlight of the movie was the most popular Madhuri’s song ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’. Thereafter, she was named as ‘Dhak Dhak Girl’ and she won the second Filmfare Best Actress Award.

In 1993, Madhuri played the role of police officer Ganga in the super-hit Subhash Ghai’s movie ‘Khalnayak’. She worked along with Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff in the movie. Even from this movie, her dance number ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’ became one of the smashing hits. In the movie ‘Anjaam’ she played the role of Shivani Chopra opposite Shahrukh Khan. The movie failed at box-office but her role of strong women earned her a seventh nomination for the Filmfare Awards. In 1994, she played a role of bubbly girl Nisha Choudhary in the movie ‘Hum Aapke Hai Koun’ opposite Salman Khan. It was one of the biggest hit in the history of Hindi cinema and had also featured in ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ as the Bollywood’s highest grossing film. The film also gave Madhuri her third Filmfare Best Actress Award.

In 1995, Madhuri played the role of Madhu Garewal opposite Sanjay Kapoor in the super-hit movie ‘Raja’. In the same year, she paired with Rishi Kapoor for David Dhawan’s movie ‘Yaraana’. In 1996, she played the role of Kajri in the movie ‘Prem Granth’ and Vishaka in the movie ‘Rajkumar’. However, both the movies flopped at the box-office. In the next year, she portrayed the role of troubled woman name Ketki in the movie ‘Mrityudand’. The movie was directed by Prakash Jha and it also featured Shabana Azmi and Shilpa Shirodkar. In 1997, she acted in the Yash Chopra’s musical-romantic movie ‘Dil To Pagal’. Madhuri played the role of Pooja who is passionate about dance and then Shah Rukh Khan offered her role in a musical-dance play. The movie also featured Karisma Kapoor and Akshay Kumar in a supporting role. The movie was commercially successful and Madhuri bagged her fourth Filmfare Best Actress Award. In the same year, she played the role of Gauri, once again opposite Shah Rukh Khan in the movie ‘Koyla’.

In 1998, Madhuri acted with Nana Patekar in not so successful movie ‘Wajood’. She also appeared in the song as a guest appearance for the movie ‘Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan’. In 1999, she acted in the movie ‘Aarzoo’ opposite Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan. In 1990s she acted in the various films like ‘Khel’, ‘Aasoo Bane Angaarey’, ‘Mohabbat’ and more.

In 2000, she featured in M.F. Husain’s movie ‘Gaja Gamini’. She also featured opposite Anil Kapoor in the movie ‘Pukar’. In the movie ‘Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke’, she played the role of Neha along with Ajay Devgn and Preity Zinta. In 2001, she acted in the multi-starrer woman oriented film ‘Lajja’. The movie also featured Manisha Koirala, Rekha, Mahima Chaudhry, Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. For the first time, Madhuri was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category in Filmfare Awards. In 2002, she acted with the two of top most Khans of the industry Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan in the movie ‘Hum Tumhare hain Sanam’. In the same year, she played a supporting role of Chandramukhi in the epic Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie ‘Devdas’, alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Madhuri won Best Supporting Actress Filmfare Award for the role of Chandramukhi. After this movie, Madhuri took a big break and shifted to USA with her husband Shriram Nene. In 2003, Ram Gopal Varma released a film named after her as ‘Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon’, starring Antara Mali in a lead role.

In 2007, Madhuri made her comeback with the dance theme movie ‘Aaja Nachle’. In spite of being nominated for the Best Actress category at Filmfare, the movie flopped at box-office. Then once again she returned to USA and later came back in Mumbai in 2011. After her return, she took television assignments as reality show judge. In 2013, she appeared as herself in the title track of the movie ‘Bombay Talkies’. A month later, she made a special appearance in a song ‘Ghagra’ from the movie ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’.

Madhuri will be soon seen in the lead role as Rajjo in the movie ‘Gulaab Gang’ along with Juhi Chawla. Her next upcoming movie is ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ which is a comedy thriller film and is all set to release in early 2014.

 

Television:

Madhuri also has strong connection with Indian television. In 1985, she played a cameo role in the first episode of the serial ‘Paying Guest’.  Then after a decade in 2001, she appeared as a contestant in the first season of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. The show was hosted by Amitabh Bachchan and it used to air on Star Plus. Madhuri won the amount of Rs.50,00,000 which she donated to Gujarat’s earthquake victims.

In 2002, Madhuri hosted the match-making show for Sony TV named ‘Kahi Na Kahi Koi Hai’. In 2005, she appeared as a guest on the season one of ‘Nach Baliye’. In 2007, she once again appeared in the show in ‘Nach Baliye: season 3’ along with Konkona Sen Sharma and Kunal Kapoor. Later she appeared as solo guest on the chat show ‘Koffee with Karan- season 2’ in 2007 and then in season 3, she shared the chat show with Sonakshi Sinha. In 2010, she once again appeared on ‘Koun Banega Crorepati’ in the Grand Finale Week of KBC season 4 that aired on Sony TV.

As Madhuri is known for her dancing passion, she was offered to be judge on the dance reality show ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa: season 4’ along with Remo D’souza and Malaika Arora Khan. She also judged the season 5 of ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’, were Malaika was replaced by Karan Johar. The trio of Madhuri, Karan and Remo also judged the season 6 of the show.

 

Another Activities

Madhuri Dixit is famous for dancing skills as well. She is a trained Kathak dancer and one of the finest dancers that Bollywood have ever had. As dance is her passion, Madhuri had opened her online dance academy named ‘Dance with Madhuri’ in 2013.

 

Social work

In 2001, Madhuri appeared in the first season of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ and won Rs. 50,00,000 which she donated for the welfare of Gujarat’s earthquake victims. She also donated some amount to an orphanage in Pune.

In 2009, Madhuri performed on her hit Bollywood songs on the live show ‘NDTV Toyota Greenathon’. It was India’s first ever nationwide campaign for the awareness of environmental issues and it was also India’s first 24-hour live telethon, a fund raising event. She also visit orphanage and spend some time with these kids. She is a Goodwill Ambassador and a patron for ‘Emeralds for Elephants’. It is a charity project to protect Asian Elephants and other rare species.

On a World Cancer day in 2012, Madhuri attended the event organized by Pawan Hans Helicopters and interacted with cancer affected children.

 

Personal life

Madhuri got married to Dr. Shriram Nene on 17th October 1999. Nene is a trained cardiovascular surgeon. After her marriage, Madhuri shifted to US with his husband as he was surgeon in Denver, US. In March 2003, Madhuri gave birth to her first child Arin and then to Raayan in March 2005. Madhuri shifted her base back to Mumbai along with her family in 2011.
