Brief Introduction

Dipti Ketkar is a well known Marathi television actress and a professional dancer. She is popularly known for her role as Abhilasha in the serial ‘Mala Sasu Havi’.

 

Early Life & Background

Dipti Ketkar was born as Dipti Samel on 16th April in Mumbai. Her father Deepak Samel is an electronic engineer and her mother Mughadha Samel is an Ayurvedic Doctor. She has a brother Vardhaman Samel who is an IT engineer.

Dipti completed her schooling from St. Thomas High School, Goregaon. She also did corresponding course in commerce. Later, she completed her graduation from Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, Juhu. In her childhood, her uncle Bharat Godambe, the makeup artist, suggested her to give audition for an ad in which she got selected. Then she worked for print ads like Vadilal Ice-cream, Cough Syrup and Bournvita.

 

First assignment/ First major break

Dipti started her career with the episodic show ‘Manushdevta’, however, she became popular for her role of Sharda Raje from ‘Avaghachi Sansar’.

 

Journey in the Industry

Dance:

At the age of 4, Dipti was into dancing as it was her passion. She always wanted to be a choreographer and her mom supported her a lot. After her schooling, Dipti pursued her education and did her B.A. in Bharatnatyam from Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, where she also learned western dance and singing. In her first year, she represented India in International Folk Dance competition held in France. She also did a show in Paris.

During final year, Dipti participated in a University- level dance competition. Her group didn’t win the competition but she met Aadesh Bandekar there. He suggested Dipti and her group to participate in the Zonal-Level competition.  They went for the auditions, where she sang, danced and acted, and got selected for the skit. Meanwhile, she did her M.A. course and even started her own dance classes. Then, she got affiliated with Mumbai University and started offering diploma in dance to her students. She also used to choreograph at various college events.

Diptii always wanted to be a choreographer and wished to work under Farah Khan. However, by that time she had become a director. On the other hand, after getting appreciation and awards in plays, Dipti built up her confidence to pursue acting as her career.

 

Acting:

Dipti began her career at a very young age by appearing on print ads of Vadilal Ice-Cream and Bournvita. When she was in 8th grade, she got a call from the production house of Adhikari Brothers. Her first serial was an episodic show ‘Manushdevta’, where she played a child artist. It was followed by episodic shows like ‘All The Best’ and ‘Shriman Shrimati’. Her first daily soap was ‘Damini’.

Later, while studying in Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, Diptii took part in the Zonal Level competition. There she met Gujarati director-writer Vipul Mehta, who was impressed with her acting skills and took her in the theatre group. Unfortunately, the skit got scrapped, but Vipul decided to make another play. In that play, Dipti played the lead role and also won the Best Actress Award at the Zonal level. She also performed at the National- level competition and grabbed another award. Later, she formed her own drama group with her friend Mihir and participated at various competitions.

After completing her college, Vipul Mehta called Dipti and offered her a Gujarati play ‘Gujjubhai Gaam Gajavyu’, where she worked along Tiku Talsania. He also offered her a Hindi play, for which she did more than 400 shows in a year. Later, she worked in various plays and also managed her dance classes.

While she was busy with theatre and dance classes, Diptii got an offer from Shirkant Thackeray (Raj Thackeray’s dad), who was making a film ‘Mahanadichya Tiravar’. That was her first film and she played a negative role in it. Her first Marathi film as the lead actress was ‘Balirajache Rajya Yeude’. Later, she acted in various Marathi movies like ‘Bhakti Hich Khari Shakti’, ‘Rangrao Chaudhary’, ‘Chal Gammat Karu’ and more. She also played a supporting role in the popular Marathi movie ‘Sanai Chaughade’, starring Sai Tamhankar and Santosh Juvekar. This film was produced by Shreyas Talpade, where he also played a cameo. In 2008, she did a small role in the Hindi film ‘Carry on Pandu’, which didn’t get released due to some reasons.

Soon Dipti was offered ‘Avaghachi Sansar’ where she portrayed the negative role of Sharda Raje. Her role was actually a cameo but due to the rising TRPs and audience’s appreciation for her role, the channel decided to extend her role. However, Dipti got married and went to US with her husband. After 5 months due to some family problems, she came back to India and once again appeared in ‘Avaghachi Sansar’. She was a part of the show till the end, for almost 3 years.  Due to her role of Sharda Raje, she came into limelight. Meanwhile, she did a dance reality show for ETV named ‘Halla Bol’ and ended as the first runner-up.

Later, Dipti was seen in ETV Marathi’s serial ‘Aai’. After ‘Aai’, Zee Marathi offered her another show ‘Kunku’, where she portrayed the character of Radhika. Soon, she got to know that she was pregnant, which came as a shock to the production house, as they had planned a long track for her in the show. However, she continued the show for 5 months. She won the Zee Marathi Best Supporting Actress award for her role of Radhika. Then, she took a break for almost 2 years for her delivery as well as for her thyroid problem. Again, she got a call from Zee Marathi for their upcoming show ‘Mala Sasu Havi’. She bagged the role of Abhilasha in the show. In spite of being in a negative role, she was loved by the audience. Recently, Zee Marathi offered her a dance reality shows ‘Eka Peksha Ek: Apsara Aali 2’. She was very happy, as dance was her life and accepted the offer. The audience got to know her other side as a good dancer.  She was appreciated on this show by Mahaguru Sachin Pilgaonkar for her excellent dancing skills. At the end, she won the competition.

Dipti has also performed in many award shows for various channels like Zee Marathi, ETV Marathi, Mi Marathi, and Sahyadri. She has hosted Zee Marathi’s event ‘Lakh Lakh Chanderi’ with Prasad Oak in 2010. She has anchored the show ‘Bollywood Dhamaka’ for Doordarshan for almost 2 years since 2005.

 

Personal life

Dipti and her husband Romit Ketkar were schoolmates. After finishing school, both of them reconnected on a social networking site, as Romit was working in the US. He came to India just to propose Dipti, and then, they got married. Romit is a chemical engineer and after their marriage, Dipti went to US.

However, after coming back to India, she gave birth to their daughter Myra. Dipti is very close to her mother-in-law. She says that her mother-in-law is very supportive and close to her in the family. It was her in-laws who told her to accept the offer from ‘Eka Peksha Ek’, as they knew her passion for dance.
