Brief Introduction
Laxmikant Berde was an Indian actor who had acted in various Marathi and Hindi movies. He was popular in the Marathi film industry as a super hit comedian.
Early Life & Background
Laxmikant was born on 3rd November 1954 in a Saraswat Brahmin family. Laxmikant was always interested in acting and his participation in stage dramas during the cultural activities for Ganesh festival at Konkanasth Vaishya Samaj, Girgaum increased his interest in acting. He had won many awards in inter-school and inter-college drama competitions. Laxmikant was a very good ventriloquist and a guitar player as well.
First Assignment / First Major Break
Laxmikant began his acting career with the Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh. However, he came into the limelight for the movies ‘De Dana Dan’ and ‘Dhoom Dhadaka’.
Journey in the Industry
Laxmikant initially started his career by playing small roles in Marathi Plays. In 1983-84, Laxmikant acquired his first major role in Purushottam Berde’s Marathi drama ‘Toor Toor’, which became a super-hit and the audience loved the comedy humor of Laxmikant.
Laxmikant made a television appearance on Doordarshan produced Marathi program ‘Gajara’ with his famous mimic style.
Laxmikant made his movie debut with the Marathi movie ‘Lek Chalali Sasarla’. Later in 1985, he acted as a second lead to Mahesh Kothare in the Marathi movie “De Dana Dan” and then, alongside superstar Ashok Saraf in ‘Dhoom Dadaka’. From these two movies, Laxmikant made a place in people’s heart and became famous in a short time.
Then from 1986 to 1996, Laxmikant gave many blockbusters like ‘Aamhi Doghe Raja Rani’, ‘Hamaal De Dhamaal’, ‘Ashi Hi Banwa Banvi’, ‘Balache Baap Brahmachari’, ‘Eka Peksha Ek’, Bhootacha Bhau’, ‘Thartharat’ and ‘Zapatlela’.
More than solo films Laxmikant had done many multi-starrer films especially with Marathi popular stars like Sachin Pilgaonkar, Ashok Saraf and Mahesh Kothare. But the duo of Laxmikant Berde & Ashok Saraf is recognized as the most successful duo in Indian cinema. Along with movies Laxmikant also kept working as the lead actor in super hit Marathi plays like ‘Shantecha Karta Chalu Aahe’ and few others.
In the last years of his life, Laxmikant launched his own production house, Abhinay Arts, named after his son.
Laxmikant had also acted in many Hindi movies. His Bollywood debut was with Sooraj Barjatya‘s film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ starring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree in 1989. After ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, Laxmikant acted in films like ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’, ‘Mere Sapno Ki Rani’, ‘Aarzoo’, ‘Saajan’, ‘Beta’, ‘Anari’ and much more.
Personal Life
Lakshimant was first married to Roohi Berde but she died on 5th April 1998. He then married Marathi actress Priya Arun. They have two children. One of their son’s name is Abhinay Berde.
Lakshmikant Berde died in Mumbai on 16th December 2004 due to a kidney ailment.
