Bhau Kadam


Brief Introduction

Balchandra Kadam is a Marathi actor and a comedian. He is popularly known as Bhau Kadam. He is most popular among the Marathi audience for his comedy acts in the show ‘Fu Bai Fu’.


Early life and Background

Bhau is born and brought up in Mumbai, Maharashtra in a Konkani family. His father used to work in BPT and his mother was a housewife. Since his childhood, all his relatives and friends called him Bhau. He completed his schooling from Dnyaneshwar Vidyalaya, Wadala. He was a very shy and quiet student. He was keen towards acting since his childhood and used to participate in his colony dramas. He has not taken any formal training in acting. During his struggling period, he has worked at many places and has also set up his own small stall.


First assignment/major break

Bhau’s first commercial break was ‘Evdach Na’, directed by Vijay Nikam, where he played the role of a person suffering from the short term memory loss.


Journey in the Industry

Bhau started his acting career by participating in Ekankika competition, and then used to perform in Rajya Natak Spardha (State level competition). Meanwhile, he formed a group named ‘Korba 37’ along with his friends Kamlakar Satpute and Kishor Choughule. They used to participate in Ekankika competitions. Then after acting in a state-level play ‘Evdach Na’ directed by Vijay Nikam, people from the industry started recognizing him as Bhau Kadam.

Later, he got many opportunities to work in various plays and has worked in theatre for almost 15 years. Apart from the comedy roles, he has also done a few serious roles in some of his plays. During this time, local people used to appreciate his work, but his family was against his acting career. During this phase, he struggled a lot and at one point he decided to quit acting. Meanwhile, he used to do several short period jobs and then owned his small stall. While working in his stall, Vijay Nikam offered him a lead role in his play ‘Jau Tithe Khau’. This was his turning point, and then onwards there was no looking back for him. He has also worked in the play ‘Ek Daav Bhatacha’. His role in the play ‘Bajirao Mast Mi’ with Sanjay Narvekar, has received an MIFTA Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor.

After theatre, Bhau started playing small roles in various movies and serials. He got his major break in television in the stand-up comedy show ‘Fu Bai Fu’, which airs on Zee Marathi. During the first two seasons of this show, he rejected the offer as he was bit scared to perform on television. However, he accepted the offer in the third season and was paired with Satish Tare. Soon he became the face of the show and his pair with actress Supriya Pathare became the audience’s favorite pair. They even won the sixth season of this show. Bhau and Supriya are also paired in the current season of ‘Fu Bai Fu’. Later, Zee Marathi signed him for the serial ‘Tuze Maze Jamena’, where he played the role of Chomdya, which was a comedy-cum-serious character. The soap was produced under the banner of Mahesh Manjrekar’s production house.

Bhau has also acted in Marathi and Hindi movies. He has worked in a film ‘Harish Chandrachi Factory’, where he played the role of a dumb and deaf character. Then, he played the role of a garage worker named Shamshad Miya in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Hindi movie ‘Ferrari Ki Sawaari’. He has also worked with Sachin Goswami in the movies ‘Pune via Bihar’ and ‘Mast Challe Amcha’. Bhau has also lent his voice for one of the songs from the movie ‘Pune via Bihar’. In 2014, he acted in Zee Talkies movie ‘Time Pass’ directed by Ravi Jadhav. Bhau has played the role of Daagdu’s father in the movie.

Bhau has performed many skits for the programs of Zee Marathi and Zee Talkies. He has also done an ad campaign for Zee Talkies and has also performed an act in the Marathi awards function named ‘Maharashtracha Favorite Koun’.


Personal life

Bhau got married to Mamta. They had a love marriage. The couple has three daughters Mrunmayee, Sanchit and Samruddhi Kadam.
