Brief Intro
Mohan Gokhale was an Indian actor, who has worked in film, television and theatre. He had worked mostly in art films like ‘Sparsh’ and ‘Mirch Masala’.
Early Life & Background
Mohan Gokhale was born in 1954 in Pune, Maharashtra. He was interested in acting since his childhood and had won several academic & state-level awards during his college years.
First assignment/ First major break
Mohan Gokhale debuted with the television show ‘Shwetambara’ which was his major break.
Journey in the Industry
Before debuting in television & films, Mohan had worked in several commercial & experimental plays. Mohan debuted on television with a Marathi serial ‘Shwetambara’. He became popular because of his role in the popular Doordarshan’s Hindi serial ‘Mr.Yogi’. The serial was directed by Ketan Mehta. In later 1990s, he acted in the show ‘Bhanwar’ aired on Sony TV. The show was based on landmark judgments from the Indian judicial system. He had also worked in the serials like ‘Aashirvad’, ‘Alpaviram’ and ‘Zanjeerein’.
Mohan acted in various Marathi films like ‘Aaj Zale Mukta Mee’, ‘Banya Bau’, ‘Thakas Mahathak’, ‘Aare Sansar Sansar’ and many more. In 1986, he acted in the movie ‘Maficha Sakshidar’, which was based on the real incident of Joshi-Abhyankar murder case. Nana Patekar was also the part of the movie. He also played a lead role in the movie ‘Hech Majhe Maher’ opposite Rema Lagoo. In 2000, he played the role of Bhaurao in the movie ‘Kairee’. The movie was directed by Amol Palekar and ‘Kairee’ was Mohan’s last movie. He had also acted in the Marathi movies like ‘Choravar Mor’.
Mohan has also acted in Hindi movies. In 1980, he played the role of Jagdish in the movie ‘Sparsh’, starring Naseeruddin Shah & Shabana Azmi. In 1984, he acted in the art film ‘Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho’. He also acted with the actors like Aamir Khan, Ashutosh Gowariker, Om Puri, Deepti Naval & Naseeruddin Shah in the Ketan Mehta’s movie ‘Holi’. In 1985, he played a supporting role of Villager in Ketan Mehta’s ‘Mirch Masala’, starring Smita Patil in a lead. Later, he appeared in the role of Mahatma Gandhi in Jabbar Patel’s biopic on Babasaheb Ambedkar. He had also worked in the movies like ‘Aadat Se Majboor’, ‘Ajeeb Itefaq’, ‘Kasam Vardi Ki’, ‘Karm Yodha’, ‘Moksha’ and more. He was working on Kamal Hassan’s movie ‘Hey Ram’, but during that period he died.
Ketan had also acted in a Gujarati movie ‘Bhavni Bhavai’ in 1980. It was Ketan Mehta’s directorial debut. He also worked in another Gujarati movie ‘Hun Hunshi Hunshilal’.
Personal life
Mohan was married to Shubhangi Sangvi, now known as Shubhangi Gokhale. She is seen in the role of Mishri Mausi on Sab TV’s comedy show ‘Lapataganj’. They have a daughter. However on 29th April 1999, Gokhale died due to heart attack in Chennai.
