Hema Sardesai is an Indian playback singer and a composer. She has play backed for over 60 Bollywood movies and has released several successful Indipop albums. She had also performed in live concerts all around India as well as in different countries. Hema is the only Indian singer to win the Grand Prix at the 16th International Pop Song Festival in Germany.
Early Life & Background
Hema was born in Mumbai but she belongs from Goa. Hema was fond of singing since her childhood. At the age of 8, she sang songs at the Navratri festival. At the age of 11, Hema won her first award at a music contest. Later for six continuous years, she won every contest in which she participated in. She has sung songs in English, Marathi, Hindi and Konkani languages. Hema is an expert Sangeet Visharad in Indian classical music as well as in western pop music.
First assignment/ First major break
Hema started her commercial singing career with the film ‘Goonj’, however she became popular after winning the Grand Prix at the 16th International Pop Song Festival 1989.
Journey in the industry
Hema started singing when she was 8 years old and won various prizes at Inter-State, National and International level. However, she started her Bollywood career by singing in the film ‘Goonj’ in 1989 for the actress Juhi Chawla. In the same year, she won the Grand Prix at the 16th International Pop Song Festival in Germany, where she represented India. She was also awarded ‘Audience Darling Prize’ and was nick named by the German media as the ‘Indian Nightingale’. Hema was the youngest contestant among all and had competed with the contestants from twenty other countries.
In 1991, she was the playback singer for the movie ‘Dushman Devta’ and later she sang in the movies like ‘Prem Yog’, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, ‘Dastak’, ‘Gupt’, ‘Dus’ and many more. In 1997, she sang the super-hit song ‘Yeh Dil Deewana’ from the movie ‘Pardes’ and then in ‘Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain’ in 1999. She sang two songs from the movie ‘Biwi No.1’, from which ‘Ishq Chandi Hai’ was quite popular among the masses. The title song of the movie ‘Jaanam Samjha Karo’ and ‘Awaara Bhaveren’ from the movie ‘Sapnay’ were also super- hits. She also sang two songs from the movie ‘Josh’, viz., ‘Apun Bola’ and ‘O Maria’. Songs like ‘Hai Re Hai Re’ from ‘Khushi’, ‘Eli Re Eli’ from ‘Yaadein’, ‘Chali Chali Phir Chali Chali’ from ‘Baghban’, ‘Khalli Valli’ from ‘Market and ‘Chori Chori’ from ‘Garam Masala’ were also sung by Hema Sardesai. She also sang a super-hit song ‘Badal Pe Paaon Hai’ from the blockbuster movie of 2007, ‘Chak De India’.
Hema has play backed for the popular actresses like Manisha Koirala in ‘Mann’, Urmila Matondkar in ‘Kunwara’, Karisma Kapoor in ‘Hum Saath Saath Hai’ & ‘Biwi No.1’, Tabbu in ‘Astitva’, Kajol in ‘Gupt’ & ‘Sapnay’, Preity Zinta in ‘Soldier’, Sushmita Sen in ‘Zor’, Madhuri Dixit in ‘Pukar’ and Kareena Kapoor in ‘Khushi’, ‘Ashoka’ & ‘Yaadein’.
Hema has worked with some of India’s most prominent music directors and composers like Anu Malik, A.R.Rahman, Vishal Bhardwaj and Pritam. She is the only singer who sang playback duets with four superstars. She sang ‘Challi Challi Phir Hava Challi’ with Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Baghban’, ‘Raatein Badi Hain’ with Naseeruddin Shah in ‘Asambhav’, ‘Apun Bola’ with Shahrukh Khan in ‘Josh’ and ‘Hum Do Hamare Do’ with Govinda.
Hema has also sung songs in different languages. She sang for the Malayalam movie ‘Anandabhadram’ in 2005 and for the Tamil movie ‘Puthukkottaielerenthu Saravanan’ in 2004. In 2004, she lent her voice for the title song of the Marathi movie ‘Astitva’, which was also released in Hindi. In 2012, she sang for the Konkani movie ‘The Victim’. She also sang the title song of the popular Zee TV’s serial ‘Hip Hip Hurray’ in 1999.
In 1999, Hema won the ‘The Best Selling Album of the Season’ award for her album ‘Piya Se Milke Nain’. She also sang hit songs in a Konkani album ‘Cu Cu Ru Cu’ and later in 2005, she released her own Konkani album ‘Goa Zaai’.
Hema also hosts her live stage shows in India & Aboard. Especially after winning Grand Prix, she performed in countries like United States, UK, Germany, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies, Thailand, Nepal and so on. She has also performed at the celebrations for the 50th year of India’s independence on 15th August 1997 in New Delhi. Hema and the respected Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar were the only two female singers who performed on that stage.
Social activities information
Hema is an active social worker, who is involved with many social & NGO events.
Hema had supported eco-friendly Ganesh idols by conducting a workshop in Powai in 2012. Hema is the first singer who has been working strongly against female foeticide and to assure the safe existence of the girl child and has also contributed extensively towards women empowerment and children’s welfare.
She had also performed at the Women’s Day rally held by Smita Thackeray in Juhu in 2010. Hema encouraged the young underprivileged girls who were invited for a film in town in 2009. She has also performed in various charitable events without taking any fees.
Hema has contributed a lot for the betterment of the Goans. She encouraged the youth to vote in the elections in Goa in March 2012. Hema went to the colleges in Goa and met the youth groups to inspire them to vote. She has also been active socially in making brave public appearances to save Goa’s beautiful environment and culture and to save children from social evils. She also contributed Rs.50,000 for the Tsunami Fund, Goa in 2005.
