Jayshree Gadkar was a renowned Marathi movie actress of mid-1950s. She has also worked in Hindi movies.

 

Early Life & Background

Jayashree was born on 21st February 1942 at Kanasgiri in a district of Karnataka.

 

First assignment/First major break

Jayshree started her career as a group dancer in ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje’ in 1955. She became popular after playing a lead role in ‘Sangtye Aika’.

 

Journey in the industry

Jayshree started her career as a child artist and entered in the films as a tamasha dancer. She debuted in the movie in a form of group dancer in the movie ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje’ in 1995, which was directed by V.Shantaram. Later, she got a small role in the Marathi movie ‘Disat Tasa Nasat’ opposite Raja Gosavi. Later, she played a lead role in a tamasha based movie ‘Sangtye Aika’. The film was successful and she started receiving offers of a lead actress in Marathi movies.

Jayshree played various Mythological roles in her career. Few to remember are- role of Radha in ‘Gopal Krishna’ in 1965, Sita in ‘Luv Kush’ in 1967, Subhadra in ‘Balram Shri Krishna’ in 1968 & ‘Shree Krishnarjun Yuddh’ in 1971, Goddess Ganga  in ‘Har Har Gange’ 1968, Maa Yashoda in ‘Shri Krishna Leela; in 1971, Goddess Laxmi in ‘Hari Darshan’ in 1972, ‘Kisan Aur Bhagwan’ & ‘Bhagat Dhanna Jatt’ in 1974 and Goddess Parvati in ‘Har Har Mahadev’.

Jayshree has acted in about 250 Marathi films which includes ‘Aaliya Bhogasi’, ‘Ghar Padli Thaka Thaka’, ‘Avghachi Sansar’, ‘Mohityanchi Sansar’, ‘Saadhi Mansa’, ‘Gharkul’, ‘Chandoba Chandoba Bhaaglas Ka’, ‘Manini’, ‘Sukh Aale Mazhya Daari’ ‘Dagabaaz’, ‘Bajrangbali’, ‘Bijlee’, ‘Mumbai Te Mauritius’ and many more. She has also acted in various Hindi movies like ‘Naya Sansar’, ‘Bindya’, ‘Sasural’, ‘Jiyo Toh Aise Jiyo’, ‘Sindoor Ka Daan’, ‘Khooni Darinda’ and many more.

After becoming successful actress, Jayshree turned director and directed films like ‘Saasar Maher’ and ‘Ashi Asavi Saasu’. She also acted in a popular mythological show of Indian history ‘Ramayana’, which was directed by Ramanad Sagar. She portrayed the role of Kaushalay in the show, while her real husband Bal Dhuri played the role of Dasharath.

Jayashree has acted in various types of Hindi and Marathi movies from tamasha based stories to mythological and from social issues to love stories. She had also published an autobiography named ‘Ashi Mi Jayshree’.

 

Personal life

Jayashree got married to a noted theatre actor Bal Dhuri. Jayashree died on 29th August 2008 at the age of 66.
